Descript

Edit video and audio by editing text, like a document.

Descript is an all-in-one audio and video editing platform built around a text-based editing model: it transcribes your recording and lets you cut, rearrange, or remove content by editing the transcript rather than scrubbing a timeline. It is used heavily by product marketers, developer relations teams, content creators, and founders at companies of all sizes who produce podcasts, demo videos, webinars, or sales content. The fundamental problem it solves is that traditional video editing has a steep learning curve and is painfully slow for teams whose primary skill is not post-production. Descript's Overdub feature lets you correct spoken mistakes by typing the correction, generating synthetic speech in your own voice, and its screen recording and remote recording capabilities mean the entire production workflow lives in one tool.

Who it's for

Product marketers, developer relations engineers, founders, and content teams at software companies who produce video or audio content regularly but do not have dedicated video editors. Descript becomes the right choice when your team is spending more than a few hours per week editing recordings in tools that require timeline expertise, or when review cycles on video content are slowing down publication.

What it does

Descriptin depth.

01

Text-Based Video Editing

Descript transcribes recordings automatically and maps every word to a timeline position. Deleting a sentence from the transcript deletes it from the video, making editing accessible to anyone who can use a word processor.

02

Overdub Voice Correction

After training on a sample of your voice, Overdub lets you fix mispronunciations or add missing words by typing them. This eliminates re-recording sessions for minor mistakes and is especially useful for long-form content like product demos.

03

Screen Recording and Capture

Built-in screen recording means you can capture a product walkthrough and immediately start editing it in the same tool. There is no file-export step between recording and editing.

04

Filler Word Removal

Descript automatically detects and highlights filler words (um, uh, like) across a recording and lets you remove all of them in one click. This saves significant manual scrubbing time on interviews, demos, and podcast recordings.

05

Collaborative Review and Comments

Teammates and stakeholders can leave timestamped comments directly on the transcript or timeline without needing a Descript account. This replaces the back-and-forth of sharing video files via Drive or Dropbox for review.

Ecosystem fit

Descript integrates with Google Drive, Dropbox, Slack, and YouTube, and can export directly to most major video hosting platforms. In a typical software team's content stack it sits alongside Loom for async video and replaces or reduces reliance on tools like Adobe Premiere for structured, edited content production.

Where teams use it

Commonuse cases.

01

Producing developer relations content and conference talk recordings

DevRel teams use Descript to edit conference talk recordings and podcast episodes by working in the transcript, cutting filler words and dead air in bulk. The result is polished content shipped in a fraction of the time it would take with a traditional NLE like Premiere or Final Cut.

02

Creating product demo videos for sales and marketing

Sales engineers record screen walkthroughs and use Descript's text editor to trim, reorder sections, and add captions without video editing experience. This lets a small marketing team produce a library of up-to-date demo videos without a dedicated video editor on staff.

03

Repurposing webinar recordings into shorter clips

Marketing teams import a 60-minute webinar recording, identify highlight moments in the transcript, and export short clips for LinkedIn or YouTube in a single session. The social clip workflow that used to take a full day of editing can be completed in under two hours.
